The Expo "Energizing the Millennium Development Goals KNOWLEDGE EXPO" took place during the fourteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-14) held in New York in May 2006. This was one of twelve posters on display on a variety of energy and MDG success stories at the Expo. The focus is on MDG 7: Ensuring Environmental Sustainability.
Challenges of generating community benefits while protecting the environment:
• Scaling up, replicating and mainstreaming community energy initiatives to expand access
to energy services to achieve the MDGs
• Channeling resources directly to non-governmental and community-based organizations that aim
to foster development, particularly in rural areas
• Reaching the poorest of the poor who are limited by literacy, exposure and disempowerment
• Ensuring small scale, community-based initiatives have a wide-reaching impact on development
• Reconciling global environment and development goals with pro-poor energy services that contribute to achieving the MDGs at the local level
Findings from SGP experiences:
• Need to integrate community energy initiatives in the national development process to facilitate the achievement of national development goals like the MDGs
• For rural energy, national policies needed to support decentralized options to energy delivery
coupled with institutional support to integrate energy options
• Necessary to build coalitions between the national government, local government, private sector, civil society (including NGOs), the community and the beneficiaries
Why is a Community-based Approach Important?
- Community options to respond to climate change challenges produce fast demonstrative results to Governments and development partners.
- Communities depend upon natural resources for their life’s and livelihoods. Local impacts in resource use lead to global impacts on environment.
