In 1997 the Special Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGASS) convened to review progress on Agenda 21, the plan of action for achieving human-centred sustainable development that was adopted at the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development It noted the critical role of energy in achieving sustainable development objectives, and declared that the ninth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-9), in 2001, would focus specifically on energy and transport issues. Energy After Rio was produced as an input to the 1997 UN General Assembly Special Session, which concluded that the ninth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development. It analyses the major economic, social and environmental issues related to energy for sustainable development and the opportunities available and challenges that lay ahead in achieving these objectives at the local, regional and global levels.
